Dave deBronkart, known on the internet as e-Patient Dave, is a pioneering advocate for patients’ health data rights and patient empowerment. A survivor of stage IV kidney cancer, he became a blogger, health policy advisor and international keynote speaker. attending over 650 conferences and policy meetings in 26 countries. He advocated in Washington for patient access to the medical record under Meaningful Use. His work continues in the age of AI, where he focuses on patients as active users of AI – not passive beneficiaries. Today he focuses on the #PatientsUseAI movement, demanding that patients be recognized as active users of AI in pursuing their own health goals.
He is a long-time user of OpenNotes, served on its advisory board, and is now actively involved in the FHIR health data standard. His TED Talk “Let Patients Help” went viral, and for years was in the top half of the most viewed TED Talks of all time with over a half million views; volunteers have added subtitles in 26 languages, indicating the global appeal of his message.
In 2012 the National Library of Medicine announced that it’s capturing his blog in its History of Medicine Division, he was the Mayo Clinic’s 2015 Visiting Professor in Internal Medicine, and he was a founding member of the BMJ’s Patient and Public Involvement project and of the FHIR Patient Empowerment Workgroup.
